Getting to Bute

The main ferry to Bute runs from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay. The service, operated by Caledonian MacBrayne, runs every 60 minutes all year round with some extra sailings during the summer months. The crossing takes approximately 35 minutes and bookings are not required. For further information and full timetables please visit www.calmac.co.uk. Rail connections are available from Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street.

Calmac also operates a smaller ferry service between Rhubodach (at the north end of Bute) and Colintraive, located on the Cowal peninsula. This is an excellent service for those wishing to take a more ’scenic’ route through the Argyll countryside as the route goes past Loch Lomond and the famous ’Rest and Be Thankful’. Ferry crossings are every 30 minutes and the journey time is only 5 minutes.

Bute is easily reached by both Glasgow International (approx. 20 miles) and Glasgow Prestwick airports (approx. 30 miles). There is a direct rail service from Paisley Gilmour Street (which serves Glasgow International) to the ferry terminal at Wemyss Bay. Trains from Prestwick also run to Gilmour Street where you change trains for Wemyss Bay. Competitive car hire is also available at both airports. Wemyss Bay is served by buses from Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock and Largs.


Directions to Ardyne House

From Rothesay Pier

Turn right out of the pier and drive in a northerly direction along the A844. In approx. 1.4 miles turn right onto shore road. Follow this road for approx. 0.7 miles. Ardyne House (No 35 Shore Road) is on your left opposite the ruins of the old steamer pier and is on the corner of Pier Lane.

From Rhuboadach Ferry

Take the A866 to Port Bannatyne. Pass through the village and turn left onto Shore Road at the war memorial. Ardyne House (No 35 Shore Road) is 0.2 miles along on your right opposite the ruins of the old steamer pier and on the corner of Pier Lane.
